A couple of months ago I was chosen to take part in the Natural Instinct 6 Week Challenge. The purpose of the challenge is to use a specific set of Natural Instinct products exclusively (morning and night) for 6 weeks and record the changes in your skin. Prior to taking the challenge, I had been using a range of products (some with natural ingredients, others without), but had never used a facial cleansing oil.
When I saw that the Natural Instinct opportunity included using a facial oil, alongside other products containing high quality natural oils, I had an idea! If you follow The Unrefined, you would know that I absolutely LOVE skin oils, particularly Jojoba. You would also know that I have acne prone skin and have tried pretty much every skin care product under the sun.
From my own experience, I have found that using certain oils on my skin helps REGULATE my oil production, rather than contribute to further oil production. This is one of the main reasons I use oil in my skin care routine, and why I was so interested in the 6 Week Challenge.
This blog post aims to break the stigma associated with using oil on acne prone skin.
Believe it or not, certain types of oils are actually beneficial for acne prone skin. Considering the skin’s uppermost layers are made up of fatty acids, ceramides and cholesterol, I believe using oils that are a similar molecular structure to your natural sebum can be very beneficial when improving your complexion.
What’s more – a study conducted by Downing DT (Essential Fatty Acids and acne)(https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/m/pubmed/2936775/) showed a correlation between acne and deficiency in certain fatty acids called “Linoleic acid”. Linoleic Acid is a component found in various facial oils, including Rosehip, Safflower and Grapeseed. Jojoba oil is another oil which is said to be a similar molecular structure to your sebum, making it great for regulating oil production.
The one thing I love about Natural Instinct products is that they contain a range of different lightweight botanical oils which truly improve your complexion. Below is a list of three of my favourite products from the range! I highly recommend each one!
This was my second favourite product from the range! I highly recommend this if you have dry, sensitive skin. Your skin is left beautifully hydrated after every use. I also love how my make-up glides on over the top of my skin after using this product!

My FAVOURITE product from the range! I believe this product improved my pigmentation and acne scarring (see before and after photo). Previous reviews show improvements in skin texture and wrinkles.

I believe this product assisted in regulating my oils throughout my PMS phase. My skin was less prone to breakouts. In fact, throughout the whole skincare challenge I only experienced two breakouts! (that is VERY unusual for me).

As someone who is definitely in the “lean start-up” phase, I most definitely ALWAYS look at the price tag of my personal care products. As much as I love natural products, sometimes the hefty price tag is something I just can’t justify. When I stumbled across Natural Instinct, I jumped on their website straight away and did a price check of the range. Can I just say – most affordable, quality, natural brand I’ve come across to date.
I will be purchasing these products again! I have always believed in using oils to help balance acne-prone skin and the Natural Instinct range is a testament to this statement. I will continue to be pro natural oils! Thank you Natural Instinct xx
